A historic football oval in Tasmania's north-west is at the centre of community backlash over a proposed housing project. Homes Tasmania says the area doesn't have enough affordable housing to meet demand.
Penguin 's historic oval is at the centre of a proposed housing project that has been met with community backlash.A Tasmania n coastal community is concerned a proposed housing development doesn't preserve the town's character or the site's history.
Libby Burton, a member of Penguin Village Taskforce, which opposes the development in its current form, said it was causing angst. Ms Burton wanted the number of lots reduced to about 40, still keeping the same amount of social and affordable homes, and more green space and shared amenities. "I don't know if that's the way Homes Tasmania works, maybe they just do what they do, but no, not here in Penguin."The site was first earmarked for housing in 2021, after consultation between the local council and residents, before it came into Homes Tasmania's possession last year.
"Who aren't there because there aren't houses for them, there aren't suitable small lots for them, or there isn't affordable housing that they can purchase.
