If the drought persists and water restrictions hit the capitals then the Coalition will be in the same position as John Howard in 2007, writes CUhlmann auspol
In early 2007 the Lodge had a certain rundown charm to it but the home of prime ministers for 80 years had clearly seen better days. For decades bureaucrats had begged governments to let them build a new, permanent official residence on land long reserved by the lake but no PM wanted to be the one to bear the electoral pain that building a new mansion would bring.
In a sign that Labor recognised that mood, Kevin Rudd cast himself as a kinder, younger version of the man in the Lodge and politely referred to his rival as “Mr Howard”. He badged himself as an “economic conservative” but one more in sync with the age.One of the lasting impressions of former prime minister Howard is that he was no different in front or behind the camera. What you saw in public was what you got in private, something that cannot be said of many leaders.
The same fate looms for the Morrison government. There was much talk of the last election being a climate change poll and that never eventuated. But if the drought persists and water restrictions hit the capitals then the Coalition will face a new "perfect storm". The Coalition appears to have three problems: no coherent policy for a sustained cut to emissions, no clear options and a minister who has knee-capped himself. It is hard to credit that Angus Taylor has done so much damage to himself on such a petty piece of politicking.
