Professor Peter Higgs, who is credited with one of the great scientific discoveries of modern times, dies peacefully at home aged 94.

The physicist who helped scientists understand the Big Bang, Peter Higgs , died peacefully at home aged 94.

The University of Edinburgh, where Higgs was emeritus professor, said on Tuesday that he died "peacefully at home following a short illness" on Monday. In 2012, in one of the biggest breakthroughs in physics in decades, scientists at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, announced that they had finally found a Higgs boson using the $10 billion particle collider built in a 27 kilometre tunnel under the Swiss-French border.

Mr Higgs's work helps scientists understand one of the most fundamental riddles of the universe: how the Big Bang created something out of nothing 13.7 billion years ago.
