NSW Police have descended on a Sydney golf course, using the land to detonate a WWII ordnance discovered at a nearby apartment block.
Officers from Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command were called to a building in North Bondi after reports a mortar was found about midday. It is unclear exactly where the mortar was found but police said the triple-0 caller believed it to be a WWII-era ordnance. Police and Australian Defence Force bomb disposal experts moved the explosive to the Woollahra Golf Club in nearby Rose Bay, where it was detonated in a controlled manner.
The operation forced some members to evacuate in the middle of their rounds as a 300-metre exclusion zone was set around the ordnance."It's been a fun little thing and everyone's been talking about it," he said.Officers were seen removing a pile of sand bags from dense bushland where it's believed the detonation occurred.
