Describing himself as a"pro-business Conservative", Mr Kwarteng tells the audience of Tory members:"Everyone is now talking about growth, not everyone agrees about the plan, but everyone is talking about how we reduce some of the burdens that we have." He stresses the need for the government to be"disciplined" and describes the 2021 spending review as the"envelope I want to work within".'I backed her from the start' - Cleverly defends TrussLast up in the main hall is Foreign Secretary James Cleverly, who begins by praising Boris Johnson's leadership.
The home secretary tells the Conservative Party conference:"We've got to stop the boats crossing the Channel. "We need to make sure our system strikes the right balance," she says, while ensuring that the country still helps those in need. "The Lib Dems will go bananas," she says, to applause."As for the lawyers, don't get me started on the lawyers."
Earlier, the home secretary accused MPs who were against scrapping the top rate of tax of staging a"coup" against the prime minister, calling it"disappointing". "We need to get back to common sense policing, empowering the police to tackle the issues facing the public. Not policing pronouns on Twitter, or non-crime hate incidents.""The police must have all they need to stop protesters who use guerrilla tactics and bring chaos... to the law-abiding majority.
Speaking in the main hall at the party's conference, he echoes the remarks of the deputy PM an hour ago, saying it is"a time for us to come together as one Conservative family to reaffirm our common cause".After praising the"hidden heroes" who work in the justice system, he says a key part of his role is ending barristers strike over legal aid fees.
But his biggest applause comes when he promises to end transgender prisoners being housed in women's prisons."One case of a sex attack or inappropriate relationship... is one too many and we have had too many in recent years." He quips that at the Conservative Party conference"we have seen a range of views that have been discussed", adding:"And that's just in the cabinet."
He adds that he was also shown messages of Conservative MPs disagreeing with MPs who had expressed their objection to the PM's actions."Members of the cabinet need to observe cabinet responsibility and discipline and they need to get behind and support the prime minister."
