Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is seeking to mobilise support for an Indigenous Voice to Parliament by appealing to young Australians through prominent sporting figures.
International basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal briefly made an appearance at the Prime Minister’s press conference on Saturday to help push the Indigenous Voice agenda ahead of a proposed referendum.
Mr Albanese says Shaq reached out to him after hearing about the measures his government was trying to take to move the debate forward. “We want to build the broadest possible support, and we want to engage with people who can connect with young people in particular but with all sections of our society,” he said.
“Shaq has that record of particularly when it comes to bringing people together of different backgrounds, which is consistent with our approach to a constitutionally recognised Voice to Parliament.”
