Queensland Health Minister Yvette D'Ath has issued a plea to residents as the state recorded 589 COVID-19 cases on Friday.

Case numbers have surged in Queensland in recent days, up from 369 on Thursday, 186 on Wednesday and 86 on Tuesday.

Ms D'Ath said with rising infections in the community it was crucial residents were wearing masks where they are required. "We have seen about two-thirds of the population probably complying with those rules at the moment, it is not fair to those people who are doing the right thing for those not wearing their masks, to let everyone down."
