‘We’ve just taken what we’ve got and walked out the door.’

A safe level of meth residue is below 0.5 micrograms per 100 square cm, according to the Clandestine Drug Laboratory Remediation GuidelinesBut the levels detected at Thornton’s house this week came in at 1.3 micrograms per 100 square cm — which 7NEWS understands is enough to put lives at risk.“We’re not allowed in there,” Thornton said of the rental they used to call home. “Basically, we’re starting from scratch — we’ve got nothing, absolutely nothing at all.

Thornton told 7NEWS that she and her kids first felt the toxic effects of the home shortly after they moved in, but she didn’t consult a professional until a neighbour, who was suspicious of the previous tenants, flagged the possibility.“We were told by the neighbours that they suspected something going on here, so we decided to contact a company to get them to come out and do some testing, and the testing came back positive for meth.

The family had to pay for the toxicity test, which found harmful levels of meth residue throughout the entire house.Emily Thornton said her four kids became ‘disgustingly sick’, and a toxicity expert told 7NEWS said the problem is all too common.Pie told 7NEWS that while many landlords remain clueless to the grim reality: “It is a well-known fact within the real estate industry with property managers that this is a real issue.

Pie said that in the past month, 63 per cent of the 100 dwellings he’s tested have been found to have methamphetamine residue, and he believes the onus should be on property managers to get all homes tested before a tenancy. His company has tests for just $100.“In the worst instances, it can cause death, in particular among young kids.He said it is “wrong” that the Thornton’s had to pay out-of-pocket to get their home tested, Pie said.

Given the high number of meth contamination instances, properties should be tested prior to a person moving in to ensure they are safe, he said.
