Firefighters are racing to get on top of dozens of blazes burning across Queensland's Southern Downs as cooler temperatures in the region offer a reprieve.

Firefighters are racing to get on top of dozens of blazes burning across Queensland's Southern Downs as cooler temperatures in the region offer a reprieve. Residents in The Glen, Silverwood and Dalveen have been told if they evacuated this week it is still not safe to return.Firefighters are working to control blazes however the fires across the region are proving to be unpredictable despite the fact that conditions have eased today.

Some fires flared up on the New England Highway on Thursday with flames jumping shortly after the road had reopened. A watch and act warning was issued for residents of Wyberba overnight which asked residents to prepare to leave however the warning has since been downgraded.Wyberba resident Anthony Rice said he saw a wall of fire coming over a ridge. "That was pretty unsettling."
