Advocates are calling for safety funding to be reinstated after alarming statistics showed 19 farmers died at work in Queensland last year, almost twice as many as any other state.
Queensland is over-represented in the 2022 Safer Farms Report with 19 fatalities and 86 injuries
While the data painted a grim picture for Queensland there were signs of improvement from the first half of 2022 with three fatalities and 18 serious injuries recorded in the state. "He ran a four-wheeler through a barbed wire fence and made a fair mess of himself. He was lucky to be alive," he said."We went back and found him in a horrible state of course and [it] changed the course of events for the rest of our lives to be honest."He said the wakeup call caused a major rethink of farm safety which included no longer using quad bikes.
Its chair, Tasmanian beef producer Felicity Richards, said any improvement was to be celebrated, but the industry still had a long way to go."Our objective at Farmsafe Australia is to push that down to zero." He said the new national group identified the reduction in farming deaths in Queensland this year, but called for the funding of the extension service to be reinstated to bring the state into line with other state programs.In August 2015, the Queensland Deputy State Coroner released the findings of an inquest into the deaths of nine people related to quad bikes.to raise awareness of the risks associated with quad bike use and enhance operator skill and safety.
