NSW travellers may require only a negative rapid test to enter Queensland in the new year, under a proposal put forward by Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk | lucy_carroll JoshDye91

NSW travellers may require only a negative rapid test to enter Queensland in the new year, under a proposal put forward by Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk.of NSW residents taking PCR tests for interstate travel, with 151,443 tests processed in the 24-hour period to 8pm on Tuesday. It is the highest tally of swabs collected in more than four months.

The rush for testing has coincided with almost 20,000 NSW people catching COVID-19 in the past seven days, with the vast majority of new infections on Tuesday reported in Sydney’s local health districts. The NSW government on Tuesday urged other states to reconsider travel testing rules, with Health Minister Brad Hazzard saying “tourism testing” was stretching lab capacity with tens of thousands of people trying to obtain a prerequisite negative result to travel to states including Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania.Dr Jeremy McAnulty, from NSW Health, said the state “is seeing incredible testing numbers” as transmission continues to rise across the state.

Mr Morrison said decisions about booster timeframes are not for politicians to make, and downplayed reports about a"We saw similar numbers [modelled] at the start of the COVID pandemic which were never realised," he told"The modelling that has been reported is a very unlikely, extreme-case scenario that assumes that nobody does anything – nobody gets boosters, there are no changes that take place, no one exercises commonsense.

Mr Morrison said ICU rates are the most important thing and "case numbers are no longer the issue" as COVID becomes endemic like other illnesses."We are watching those rates in hospitals. At the moment, they are performing very well. Victoria has had over 1000 cases a day for some time now and their hospital system is standing up very well. The same is true here in NSW," he said.
