Veteran squash player Rachael Grinham and three-time hockey gold medallist Eddie Ockenden will jointly carry the flag for Australia at the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony, as officials confirmed some athletes will be allowed to compete over the next fortnight even if they have COVID-19.
“We’re really focusing on wearing masks indoors and while we’re moving around in a crowded sort of space, even outdoors, but given the moment we will be masks off, if people want to,” Thomas said. The first female athlete to attend six Commonwealth Games, Grinham, 45, will lead more than 250 Australian athletes and team officials will march in the ceremony. She is the first squash player in the history of the Games to carry the flag.
Tasmanian Ockenden, 35, is the second athlete from hockey to carry the flag, following in the footsteps of Mark Knowles, another Kookaburras co-captain who was the flag bearer four years ago on the Gold Coast. “I love representing Australia in hockey but I love the other sports as well and being able to continue on the tradition of the Commonwealth Games and represent the athletes is amazing.”
