Sleep experts concerned about the detrimental effects the pandemic is having on our sleep are investigating the use of light therapy.
The Woolcock Institute is researching the link between home lighting and sleep patterns among Australians who are spending more time indoors during COVID-19. "I think they're staying at home longer, they're not getting as much natural sunlight than they did before and it's disrupting their sleep patterns," Associate Professor Christopher Gordon from Woolcock Institute of Medical Research said.Dr Gordon is putting that link to the test by recruiting 80 people over the age of 50 across New South Wales.
Participants in the study wear watches to measure their sleep and a small sensor is used to monitor light exposure over one week.Stage two of the study will involve participants visiting the laboratory to receive specific doses of light with the aim of improving their sleep.
