Residents in Perth's north-east welcome today's opening of the Ellenbrook rail line after years of delays and cost blow outs, but not everyone is convinced locals will use it amid concerns over bus route changes.
The Ellenbrook rail line is finally up and running after years of delays and cost blowouts. The Ellenbrook rail line opens today after more than a decade of delays and political wrangling. What's next:
It's the second major Metronet launch this year following the opening of the Yanchep line in July, with that event attracting hundreds of eager passengers keen to take a ride. But after winning government, the Liberal Party decided Ellenbrook's population didn't justify a major rail extension. The total cost of the Metronet project — which involves other rail extensions — was initially pegged at about $4 billionUpper Swan District Ratepayers and Residents Association chairperson Kerry Rowe says her group is supportive of the rail line.
"I was told the buses from Bullsbrook that head straight down Great Northern Highway to Midland would be detoured out to Ellenbrook before they got to Midland, thus creating extra journey time and inconvenience," Ms Rowe said.
