Retailers gear up for busy Boxing Day despite Omicron fears | hijessicayun domp

Retailers are gearing up for a rush of shoppers on Boxing Day with expectations for record spending levels, despite the surge in COVID-19 cases and increasing concerns among customers over the highly infectious Omicron strain.

Shoppers looking for a discount will most likely find them among clothing, footwear and accessories as retailers seek to get rid of old stock that couldn’t be sold during this year’s protracted lockdowns. ‘Yes, we’ve seen foot traffic decline with Omicron, but it hasn’t been what we saw in the first two lockdowns where it just falls off a cliff.’Shoppers are also being warned to expect longer queues as widespread staffing shortages in the retail sector and social distancing rules constrain the numbers of customers permitted in stores, he warned. “There will be social distancing and crowd management that will be required, which the stores will be implementing.

Gary Novis, chief executive of Tarocash and Rockwear owner Retail Apparel Group said there was a level of “nervousness” among shoppers over COVID but, overall, he was feeling positive for the post-Christmas period.
