Sky News host Peta Credlin has slammed the Victorian Labor government’s decision to increase the fees families must pay in order to enact the will of a dead relative.

'Reintroduced death taxes ': Sky News host Peta Credlin slams the Victoria n Labor government's probate fee increase as a 'revenue grab on the dead'

“If you thought that death duties had been abolished in Australia, think again,” Credlin said in her Sky News editorial on Tuesday. The Supreme Court’s private office currently charges fees ranging from $68.60 for estates valued at less than $500,000 to as much $2,319 for estates valued at more than $3 million. But a new fee, scheduled to kick in on November 18, sets a new top fee of $16,804, with even relatively small estates facing fee increases of 650 per cent.

The government’s new probate fee schedule will abolish probate fees for estates valued at less than $250,000, saving some families the amount it costs to refill a small car with petrol.Estate values between $250,000 to $500,000 will see their rates increase from $68.60 to $514, with those valued between $500,000 and $1 million now be charged $1,028 instead of the current rate of $367.
