A coronial inquest hears South Australia Police has made changes to how officers manage detainees who make comments about suicide ideation, following the death of a well-known mental health advocate from the Riverland, William 'Bill' Stockman.
A coronial inquest has heard South Australia police are making procedural changes to how officers manage detainees who make comments about suicide ideation.
The 49-year-old was arrested for breaching an intervention order after approaching his ex-wife while intoxicated at the Renmark Hotel in October 2019. The court heard the charging officer at Berri Police Station, Sergeant Melanie O'Donnell, questioned Mr Stockman's comments and asked if he felt like harming himself. When asked why police didn't probe further, Sergeant O'Donnell told the court "I hear people say this all the time … It sounded more like an off-the-cuff, angry comment from someone who was frustrated with his situation.
But Mr Evans raised concern over the decision not to reverse the quick turnaround after Mr Stockman made his comments about potential self-harm.
