Queensland’s 2021 road toll the worst in the nation

Australia’s road toll is on track to increase despite this year’s COVID-19 lockdowns, prompting the medical and motoring sectors to demand all levels of government treat vehicle-related deaths and injuries with the same seriousness shown towards the pandemic.

But motorcyclist deaths are up almost 16 per cent to 219 to the end of November compared to the same period last year. The chair of the national trauma committee of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, Dr John Crozier, said not only had the country failed to meet its road toll reduction target but data about the accident-related serious injuries was up to four years out-of-date.

Dr Crozier said the death toll was a “silent epidemic” that should have the same sort of government focus as the pandemic. Australian Automobile Association managing director MIchael Bradley said the nation’s transport ministers needed to focus their attention on the failure to drive down the road toll.
