Egan Butcher, despite missing half of the 2024 NRL season due to a knee injury, is set to receive a contract extension from the Roosters. Meanwhile, Sione Hopoate is making a strong impression during his pre-season with the Broncos.
The Roosters are reportedly set to hand an injured forward Egan Butcher a contract extension after he missed half of the 2024 season due to a season-ending knee injury. Butcher ruptured his ACL in Round 12 against the Raiders last year, requiring surgery that sidelined him for the rest of the Roosters ' 2024 campaign. The 24-year-old is expected to receive a new two-year deal, with his current contract expiring at the end of the 2025 season.
Roosters medical staff are reportedly confident Butcher will be fit to play in Round 1 against the Broncos in 2025. He started the 2024 season in NSW Cup before securing a spot on the bench under Trent Robinson, until his injury occurred. In 2023, he played in the back row for most of the year, and Butcher could potentially return to the starting lineup with Terrell May and Sitili Tupouniua leaving the club. Meanwhile, another member of the Hopoate rugby league family is making waves in the NRL. Sione Hopoate, 26 years old, has reportedly impressed Broncos coach Michael Maguire during Brisbane's pre-season campaign. He is currently on a train and trial contract with the Red Hill club, which has been repeatedly extended by the new Broncos coach, who has been pleased with his performance. Sione is another son of John Hopoate, who played for the Sea Eagles and Tigers, and represented NSW and Australia. Albert, Lehi, Jamil, and Will Hopoate have all previously played first grade, while Sione won Wynnum Manly’s player of the year award in 2024 in Queensland Cup.

Mam pleaded guilty to the charges following a head-on collision in October. The incident injured a four-year-old child. While Bleijie expressed his disappointment, Attorney General Deb Frecklington stated that any decision regarding an appeal would be made by her office after consultation with colleagues. Frecklington also acknowledged public expectations for stricter penalties for drug-impaired driving compared to mobile phone use while driving.
