Footage released by the FSB showed Mr Safronov being arrested outside his Moscow flat by armed agents who searched him before putting him into a van. The FSB said in a statement Mr Safronov was accused of relaying sensitive data to a spy agency of an unspecified NATO member. Prior to that, Mr Safronov worked as a correspondent covering military issues, arms trade and government affairs for the top business daily Kommersant and another business daily, Vedomosti.
Police officers arrested one of Ivan Safronov's colleagues after she protested outside the FSB's headquarters with a sign saying: "We demand justice and openness in the trial of Ivan Safronov."Several journalists, including those who worked with Mr Safronov for years, were detained outside FSB's headquarters in Moscow when they held pickets to protest his arrest.
