Some residents are wondering at what point will they give up taking the plunge in the spectacular upper Ord River.

The upper Ord River typifies what Dylan Hearty loves about living in Kununurra, an outback town known for its striking landscapes and vast wilderness areas.

Spinifex clad red-orange cliffs, pandanus palms and paperbarks line the water as it cuts through remote, uncultivated rocky ranges."You've got waterfalls flowing into it in the wet, during the dry you're up there whether it's wakeboarding and barbecues with friends," he said. But the threat of saltwater crocodiles has some residents thinking twice about taking a plunge.

"The fear it would instil … if we lost that way of life it would be devastating to the community of Kununurra," she said.Saltwater crocodiles caught in Lake Kununurra are often destroyed by authorities if relocation is deemed impractical due to their territorial nature and the lack of an available crocodile farm.Ms Bolten Magnay said she wanted the taboo removed around suggestions of a potential localised crocodile cull.

The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions said it was not a significant increase.
