NSW schools across the public, independent and Catholic systems run dozens of mental health programs without any clear evidence they are effective, a new study shows | niltiac

NSW schools across the public, independent and Catholic systems run dozens of mental health programs without any clear evidence they are effective, a new study shows.

“There seemed to be this real intention on the school’s part to be delivering programs in the mental health and wellbeing space, but we had concerns about just what sort of information they had access to, to help guide them in the selection of programs and how they might implement those effectively,” she said.

Associate Professor Laurens said it was too early to say whether the Department of Education’s new guidelines would help because they were only introduced in 2020 and the past two years had been disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. She pointed out that 200 of the surveyed schools were in the Catholic or independent sector and wouldn’t have that oversight.

“It’s really trying to take that burden away from schools and surround them with the evidence that’s available for these programs and making it easy for them to navigate because there are lots of programs out there.”
