At Huntingtower, yard duty is pleasant and teachers don’t need to control their classrooms.
Huntingtower’s median study score has increased from 36 to 37 over the past decade, and the percentage of VCE study scores above 40 have been among the highest in the state. Huntingtower also gives teachers autonomy and has a deep professional development budget for staff. “One of our secrets is we employ good people and then let them do their job,” Houghton said. “We don’t micromanage.”The school runs a “Period 6” program, in which every subject in every year level provides after-school support at least once a week. At these sessions, students collaborate, speak to teachers and do their homework.
