Search recommences for missing surfer at Coogee | marywardy
Police have recommenced their search for a missing surfer who was last seen struggling in the water on Tuesday afternoon at an eastern suburbs beach.
Police from Eastern Beaches Police Area Command were called to Coogee Beach after 5pm on Tuesday in response to reports a man on a long blue surfboard was struggling in large waves about 200 metres from the shore.Credit:A dangerous surf warning was in place for Sydney and large parts of the NSW coast on Tuesday, with wave heights in excess of five metres and rough conditions recorded at Coogee.
A witness told police the man appeared to be close to two other surfers when he was struggling in the waves, but the two surfers were unable to tell police where the man went.CCTV footage taken from the beach showed seven surfers in the water just after 5pm, although only six surfers were confirmed by CCTV to leave the water, police said.Police have not received a missing persons report.
"It is quite possible the surfer left the beach via an area which was not covered by CCTV cameras," Acting Inspector Peter Lawlor from Eastern Beaches Police Area Command said.
