Senator Kimberley Kitching faced a factional brawl before suffering a fatal heart attack on Thursday.
The 52-year-old foreign policy hawk had been dealing with the thyroid issue and taking medications since it was identified last year. She had been experiencing symptoms, but her condition had since improved,It is unclear if the thyroid troubles contributed to her heart attack, which caused her to pull her car over in Strathmore to call her husband Andrew Landeryou on Thursday afternoon.
In a meeting of the Victorian Right on Wednesday morning, allies of Senator Kitching including Plumbers’ Union boss Earl Setches and Health Workers Union leader Diana Asmar raised a discussion about Senator Kitching’s endorsement.
Ms Asmar is also threatening a High Court challenge against the party to overturn the federal takeover of Victorian Labor and sources said the looming court case meant factional leaders were unwilling to offer support for Ms Asmar’s preferred candidate. Senator Kitching was on the losing side of the recent factional war in the Victorian Labor Party. Her party grouping, the Health Workers Union, was aligned with state MP Adem Somyurek, the dumped former powerbroker who dominated the Victorian branch.
“She’s a very strong person. She could give as good as she could get. But you take it away, you take it all home with you don’t you? And that’s not just a politician. It doesn’t matter what line of work politics isn’t special in that way, but it’s not different either. Stress is like invisible coats of paint. It’s got to be having its impact and she was greatly stressed.
