‘Silence taken as acceptance’: State will intervene in tardy councils over housing | AngusGthompson
The NSW government will intervene in the decision-making of councils that hold up rezoning bids in a drastic push to unclog the housing supply pipeline.
“We remain committed to the idea of intervening where there’s planning failure, where [the] local council doesn’t have the capacity or the interest in focusing on developing in the places where there’s been significant investment,” Mr Stokes told the Property Council of Australia event. In his speech, Mr Stokes also referred to a deadlock between the City of Sydney and the state-run Land and Housing Corporation over the redevelopment of the Waterloo public housing precinct, in which he had warned at the beginning of this year the government could intervene.
The government is also proposing to strip down the way land rezoning applications are processed by compelling developers, councils and state government agencies to consult one another before an application is submitted, so councils aren’t given the chance to create administrative delays.
