That scenario has worried many analysts, some of whom now think Beijing may prefer a blockade to crossing the 100-mile-wide Taiwan Strait for an all-out attack. The agriculture ministry also says it has accumulated seven months’ supply of rice in nearly 2,000 public granaries across the island. Annual statistics released last month by the agriculture ministry showed that Taiwan’s food self-sufficiency rate had fallen to just 30.3 per cent, the lowest in 18 years.
