Opinion: So you’re a ‘quiet quitter’? Why not be brave and truly quit your job | Cat Woods

If you want to “quiet quit”, I urge you to “actually quit”. Not just for yourself, but for the sake of your colleagues and everyone who depends on your work.

You can work it out. Don’t “quiet quit” while staying in the job you hate ... make some noise about a job you’d love.Quiet-quitting is not a generational thing, I’m certain of it. Millennials, at about 30 years old, work extraordinarily hard to support their aspirations of a sustainable career, owning a home, achieving financial security. They are also a generation that has seen the possibilities of multiple roles and careers within their lifetimes rather than being harnessed to a job for life.

Many people work in jobs that require enormous passion, energy and commitment well beyond what their take-home pay justifies and the option of emotionally checking out and going about their tasks without investment is just not an option. If any of these essential workers was to quiet-quit, not only would their clients sense a lack of commitment and integrity, but their colleagues would inevitably wonder why they were picking up the slack.

It’s a selfish concept. At the same time, it saps any potential of finding joy and genuine purpose in your work.As a freelance journalist, I spend a lot of my time with frayed nerves, wondering if I will ever work again, but I choose this job. This is what I love. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t do it. If I wanted to mentally check out, I’d get a job where nobody required my intellect, energy or emotional investment.
