More than 1,300 cars were stolen across the Northern Territory last year, and police say social media is fuelling the issue.

Siân Rogers says she may never feel safe in her home again after thieves broke in and stole her car keys and vehicle six months ago.More than 1,300 cars were reported stolen across the Northern Territory in 2024, with police saying vehicle theft is a "massive problem".

Despite Ms Rogers's housemates being home at the time, a group of people had unlawfully entered their house, taken her keys and made off with her car. Ms Rogers's car was one of more than 1,300 vehicles that were reported stolen across the Northern Territory last year."It is a massive issue all across the territory, especially Alice Springs and Darwin," NT Police Force Detective Senior Sergeant Dale Motter-Barnard said.

The added element of having her home invaded has also left her shaken and struggling to sleep at night.Social media 'notoriety' driving theft among young offenders Senior Sergeant Motter-Barnard said one of the most prolific cohorts of offenders was from the West Daly region that stretches from Daly River, about 200 kilometres south of Darwin, to Wadeye on the NT's west coast.

Senior Sergeant Motter-Barnard described a "typical" night of offending as involving a group of youths stealing several vehicles from a single street or suburb and using them to "go on a spree of ram raids or other unlawful entries".Senior Sergeant Motter-Barnard said older model Toyota Hiluxes and Land Cruisers were the prime targets for vehicle thefts in the NT.
