South Australian football legend Neil “Knuckles” Kerley has died in a car accident aged 88
.
A statement by South Australian police said the accident occurred just before 5.30pm near the small Murray River town of Walker Flat, about 100 kilometres north of Adelaide. “Our hearts go out to his family, friends, entire West Adelaide and SA Football community during this time of mourning,” the statement said.Kerley began his football career with Barmera in the Riverland Football League in the late 1940s before joining West Adelaide in 1952.
After his coaching career ended, Kerley was a boundary rider for Channel 7 telecasts of AFL during the 1990s and was until his death a selector for the AFL’s All-Australian team.
