Southwest flight cancelations meltdown to end Friday, airline says

After days of canceling thousands of flights and upending holiday gatherings from coast to coast, Southwest Airlines said it will return to normal operations with “minimal disruptions” starting on Friday, just in time for New Year’s celebrations.

“We are encouraged by the progress we’ve made to realign crew, their schedules, and our fleet,” the airline said in a statement. “With another holiday weekend full of important connections for our valued customers and employees, we are eager to return to a state of normalcy.” The airline continues to operate about one-third of it’s scheduled flights on Thursday with over 2,300 flights canceled nationally and over 250 flights axed at airports in San Jose and Oakland.

“We know even our deepest apologies – to our customers, to our employees, and to all affected through this disruption – only go so far,” the airline said while includingto submit reimbursement requests for meals, hotel stays, and transportation costs due to the disruptions. “We have much work ahead of us, including investing in new solutions to manage wide-scale disruptions,” Southwest said.
