Flight paths from Sydney Airport's main north-south runway are set to be altered as a result of the change to the airspace when the new Western Sydney Airport opens in 2026.

According to a draft Environmental Impact Statement released by the federal government on Tuesday, planes taking off from the main runway and then heading off toward the west, north-west, or east will see their flight paths altered.

All planes taking off from the RAAF base at Richmond could see their flight paths slightly changed too. The flight changes come to ensure there will be a safe distance between planes in the air at any one time. The Environmental Impact Statement also suggested property owners near Badgerys Creek Airport could be entitled to taxpayer funding to help insulate their houses from aircraft noise.
