The unions wanted 24-hour trains. Later this week, some services may not run at all.

The NSW government has warned commuters to expect severe disruptions to the passenger rail network, which could escalate to a complete stoppage of all services for three days from Thursday.

Industrial action was avoided at the weekend after NSW Labor agreed to the Rail, Tram and Bus Union’s demands to run 24-hour train services. However, the impasse continues and Transport Minister Jo Haylen told commuters to prepare for widespread delays later this week. “We have respectfully asked the unions to withdraw these bans. Unfortunately, they are yet to do so. These bans make it harder and harder for us to operate our train network, and it does mean that passengers should expect disruption later this week,” Haylen said. “That could involve a complete stoppage of operations across the rail network.”

Minister for Transport Jo Haylen has warned commuters that they could be in for heavy delays amid ongoing union tensions.Haylen said the government was due to negotiate with the union later on Tuesday but would not comment on specifics of the discussion. Sydney Trains chief executive Matt Longland said they had been in talks with the RTBU in a bid to avoid affecting 1 million passengers in the standoff.“We put a proposal to the union last night so that we would be able to operate on one line.

The deadlock is the latest in a series of disputes over a pay deal for which the RTBU has negotiated with the government for the past six months. Labor has offered the 14,000 rail workers across NSW wage increases of 3.5 per cent in the first year, 3 per cent in the second and 3 per cent in the third, lower than the union’s demand for a“We want to resolve this by Christmas. The best way to do that is to negotiate, not to put bans in place,” Haylen said.
