Social commentator Prue MacSween says although the nation is facing "a terribly traumatic time" dealing with the bushfire crisis, she believes it would be "totally wrong" for Sydney's New Year's Eve fireworks to be cancelled. On Monday, the New South Wales Rural Fire Service had approved the fireworks display to go ahead as planned.
Earlier on the same day, NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro had pushed for the display to not go ahead - a stance echoed by a petition which has accrued more than 270,000 signatures. Ms MacSween said it would be "lovely" if the NYE celebrations could be used to raise money for the firefighting efforts, as devastating blazes continue to grip parts of the nation.
