Commuters on Sydney Trains have been warned to expect delays as members of the Electrical Trades Union (ETU) stage a strike on Wednesday. The strike, involving hourly work stoppages between 8am and 4pm, is expected to impact maintenance and potentially lead to unpredictable delays. While a separate 'go-slow' action by the Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) was postponed, the ETU strike is causing concern for travellers. ETU members are marching from Hyde Park North to NSW Parliament to demand a fair deal and protest against alleged attempts to strip away safety protections.

Commuters travelling on Sydney Trains have been warned to leave extra travel time as an employee strike on Wednesday threatens to cause delays. Sydney Trains commuters have been warned of delays as members of the Electrical Trades Union ( ETU ) take part in planned industrial action. While 'go-slow' industrial action initially planned for Wednesday was postponed for 48 hours after the rail union reached an agreement with the New South Wales government, the ETU strike has gone ahead.

The strike, which will involve members of the ETU taking part in hourly 'work stoppages' between 8am and 4pm across the train network, is set to impact maintenance requirements which may lead to unpredictable delays. 'The ETU bans might impact upon maintenance requirements or cause delays in responding to issues with infrastructure,' a spokesperson for the NSW government said. The ETU is a union consisting of more than 60,000 electricians, apprentices and electrical workers across Australia. Sydney Trains employees are expected to attend the ETU rally, which is due to be held across the Sydney CBD as they march from Hyde Park North to NSW Parliament where speeches will be held as disputes continue over stalled pay demands. Picture: John Gass ETU Secretary Allen Hicks said the industrial action should send a message to the state government about workers' frustration over being able to achieve a fair deal. “It has been almost 70 days since the NSW Government sat down and negotiated with workers. The disrespect with which the government is treating its essential rail workers is appalling,” Mr Hicks said in a statement. “All our electrical workers at Sydney Trains want is a fair deal. These are workers who in some instances could earn double what they’re currently on if they worked in Queensland’s rail system.” Mr Hicks also claimed the government has been 'trying to strip away' safety protections and risk assessment procedures from a new agreement. 'Workers need to be able to speak up when they know something is unsafe on the network, but the government wants to take that right away, putting workers and commuters at risk.' The postponed 'go-slow' industrial action by the Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) would have resulted in trains travelling 23 kilometres per hour below the speed limit in zones of 80km/h or above. NSW Transport Minister John Graham provided an update on Tuesday afternoon, confirming the union had agreed to pause its industrial action for two days. 'This agreement was reached as part of ongoing discussions,' Mr Graham said in a statement, per The Daily Telegraph.
