Take me home, Country Road: When your fashion first love wants back in | Damien Woolnough

Bumping into your first love is awkward. It’s worse when the heartbreaker looks the same as 34 years ago, while your own myopic squint and retreating hairline reflect a rougher passage of time.

“So many people remember running off to the clubs in this shirt,” says Chris Vogelpoel, head of design menswear at Country Road. “Now their children and grandchildren will do the same.” Combing the archives to recapture lightning in a bottle and at the checkout, Country Road’s creative team settled on the chambray shirt because of its unisex appeal and connection to Bennett, who was enlisted to collaborate on reviving the classic.“We really wanted to work with Steve, and he was instrumental in making this happen, along with being pedantic about the colour, weave and details,” Roesby says.

There have been minor tweaks, with the shirt volume subtly reduced, without detracting from its oversized appeal.
