The prolonged extreme weather event affecting Tasmania has left around 30,000 people without power, with residents in a one community being told they should prepare to leave due to a flood risk.

A "vigorous west to north-westerly airstream" is continuing to bring heavy rain and strong winds to Tasmania, with one community being told they may have to evacuate due to flood risk.

A major flood warning urging residents near New Norfolk, in Tasmania's south, to prepare to leave has been issued by the State Emergency Service. The SES said the locations likely to be impacted are Meadowbank, Glenora, Bushy Park, Gretna, and Macquarie Plains. TasNetworks said it received reports of a power transformer fault in Launceston at about 10 o'clock last night, which left residents in Launceston, Riverside, Trevallyn and West Launceston without power.
