The Tasmanian Liberal government will release its 11th consecutive state budget today, with debt levels projected to rise to $8.5 billion in four years' time. The premier says it is not the time to reduce investment in 'key areas'.

The Tasmania n government will release its 11th consecutive state budget today, the third presented by Treasurer Michael Ferguson .

Responding to Labor claims he had lost control of the state's budget, he defended the government's spending record. Commonwealth Public Sector Union Tasmania general secretary Thirza White is concerned further about further savings measures to the public sector.Labor treasury spokesperson Josh Willie said the budget would be "the worst and most unsustainable" in Tasmania's history.

He claimed the government had "mortgaged the state's future", and was prioritising its "short-term political future" by racking up record levels of debt.Apart from the debt, and the big increase for the commission of inquiry response, some information about smaller initiatives has been released. "The question is whether Tasmania can afford such an ambitious infrastructure investment program," Mr Eslake said in his report.

The budget will also include all of the commitments made by the Liberal Party in the lead up to March's election.Photo shows An aerial view of a townAnalysis by Carrington ClarkeInternet Culture
