Sydney's public transport usage is currently as low as it was a century ago - when the city's population was just one million | Rabe9 | pallavisinghal_
Sydney’s public transport patronage has fallen by about three-quarters amid the coronavirus pandemic, with the fewest number of people using the network in almost a century.
Despite the unprecedented fall, Transport for NSW is continuing to run services at the normal rate to ensure those still using the system are adequately spaced in an effort to avoid COVID-19 transmission. “Transport for NSW remains committed to providing a safe service that essential travellers can rely on in the coming weeks and months, and we are not making any moves to reduce these services at this time.”
This is the equivalent of about half a million trips being taken across the network every day, compared to a daily average of two million in recent years.University of Sydney senior lecturer in transport and logistics Geoffrey Clifton said while a decline was expected, the speed at which it occurred was shocking.

NSW pledges $100m to support frontline health workers and $35m to research | Sky News AustraliaNew South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian has unveiled an additional $100 million to support frontline workers and $35 million to go towards vital research. \n\nNew South Wales will offer free accommodation and parking for health workers “so they don’t have to worry about taking the disease home and unintentionally passing it on to their loved ones”. \n\nPremier Berejiklian said the state committed $35 million toward vital research because “we want our best and brightest here in NSW and Australia working to find a vaccine as soon as possible, because the reality is, until we find a vaccine, we all have to live with this virus”. \n\n“We have to be honest with ourselves, until a vaccine is found, there is no simple way to deal with this issue… social distancing is the new normal,” she said on Tuesday. \n\nThe Premier said the NSW coronavirus death toll now stood at 21, after three more people succumbed to the virus on Monday. \n\nAmong them was a Ruby Princess passenger, a resident from Opal Care in Bankstown and a resident of the Dorothy Henderson Lodge in Macquarie Park. \n\nImage: News Corp Australia
