The government’s plan to lift the concert cap from six to 20 a year has won conditional support from key sporting tenants but sparked outrage among nearby residents.
All the major sporting codes using Allianz Stadium have made submissions to Venues NSW regarding a proposed increase to the number of concerts the stadium can hold.
But Venues NSW deputy chairman Rod McGeoch baulked at the requests, saying there was room for everything at the recently rebuilt stadium and the government had made its intentions clear. The NRL asked for the concert season to take place between November and February only, with an undertaking the league would not be prevented from booking the venue for NRL or NRLW home-and-away and finals matches between March and October.
Clubs and codes also warned they must not be left with damaged turf from concerts, or the repair bill. “It is essential for player safety that rugby league is played on a surface that meets minimum standards,” wrote NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo.Venues NSW has now been invited to respond to the submissions as part of the formal planning process, but McGeoch told thethere was plenty of space on the calendar for Allianz to host more events while keeping the sporting codes happy.
The planned changes would also allow concert soundchecks until 10pm, increase the maximum concert length from five to 10 hours for two concerts a year, and provide a curfew exemption that allows the official Mardi Gras after-party to be hosted at the stadium. Nicole McKenna of Paddington said that between the concert cap and the proposed Oxford Street cycleway, “Paddington residents feel like we are under attack from multiple angles and trying to respond to, and deal with, the impact is exhausting.”Graham Bedford of Surry Hills said the potential all-night Mardi Gras party was the worst part. “It really is the last word in the ‘suck it up and be happy’ approach to the local community,” he wrote..
