"It is the only place in the world you can be between two continents and go scuba diving at the same time as well," diving instructor Ants Stern said.and is constantly undergoing minor changes as the tectonic plates drift apart by around two centimetres a year.
For snorkellers and scuba divers, it's a geological wonder, but there is a catch — the water temperature is near freezing. In the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Thingvellir in Iceland, there's a crack between two tectonic plates, filled with crystal clear glacial meltwater. "For people back home in Australia, slightly colder, it's between two to four degrees Celsius," Mr Stern said.Regardless of which side of the globe you'd choose, it is a natural wonder in between that's captivating the crowds.
The tectonic fault line can be witnessed above water too. As the plates move away from each other, they tear open fissures in the ground.
