It has a fascinating history
With the weather picking up in recent days, and the Easter holidays upon us, it is time to start thinking about how to make the most of the time off.
Situated on the north side of Loch Crinan and across from the village of Crinan in Argyll, the historic castle is believed to be the oldest continuously occupied castle on mainland Scotland. The category B listed building dates back to the 13th century, when it was constructed by the MacDougall clan.
Since taking ownership of Duntrune, Clan Malcolm have undertaken significant restoration work. While the castle itself remains a private residence, the gardens are open to the public. Given its many owners of the centuries, it is not exactly surprising that Duntrune is believed to be haunted by a spirit. According to local legend, not only have there been mysterious reports of banging noises and flying objects—but even the sound of bagpipes on occasion.
