spoke to multiple sources who said Smith was certain to see out the PGA Tour season, where he could usurp Masters conqueror Scottie Scheffler as world No.1. He’s also likely to play September’s Presidents Cup, in which he would be asked to spearhead the International team against the likes of Scheffler, Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa and Jordan Spieth for the United States.
Leishman is managed by the same company as Smith, while two-time Australian Open winner Matt Jones was the highest-profile Australian to jump to LIV, playing their inaugural event outside London in June. The PGA Tour’s elbows-out-at-the-buffet schedule, which includes events jammed into latter months of the year when the limited Australian summer is afforded a window, has rankled many within the local industry.
It will be a homecoming not seen since Scott brought the green jacket back in 2013. Even if he does jump to LIV, local officials are confident he would be able to play as the Open and PGA are co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour, who are yet to indefinitely ban players for signing on Norman’s dotted line.
Perhaps of even more importance, is LIV Golf receiving world rankings points. They don’t have it yet, and as his players keep dropping positions the longer there is no agreement, they will jeopardise their positions in the four majors .“In that position where Cam is now, he’s in a great position,” Smith’s former Presidents Cup captain Ernie Els said. “He’s entering his prime. He’s 28. He’s got time now to win majors and I wouldn’t want to put that under any danger of not happening.
