Comments by curator Adam Lowe: Boris is a Russia n photographer, born in Ukraine , who’s really a product of the Soviet era. Now he’s in a very difficult position because he has a Russia n passport, but he’s Ukrainian, and so he’s not welcome in either country
I think this is one of the classic images from the 80s taken in Moscow. I like the sense of the shadow and the composition, and the whole language of it, where a bit of tin foil on the floor is as important as a figure or a car or a piece of glass. There are people in the show, but they assume the same kind of role as a steel girder or a handrail or a brick
For Boris the cameras, the lenses, in digital photography the sensors, the type of film, how he prints it, are all equally important. So the tools that he uses and the way he presents his images are critically important to how you see them
