I have become the Weather Grinch. The Scrooge of sunshine. My idea of a beautiful morning means the sound of rain on the roof. | COMMENT

We need to change how we talk about climate. Not the apocalyptic stuff: melting ice-caps, stranded polar bears, sinking islands. Others more qualified than me are already doing that. I mean the day-to-day stuff. The one-dry-day-to-another stuff. The cheery TV weather presenters telling me how glorious today has been and that tomorrow will also be sunny. People greeting me with “lovely day!” and then looking bemused when I stay silent. Because what I want to say, but don’t, is: “Let it rain.

Maybe you’ve noticed the sad statistics for this year. Rainfall well below average. Dam levels down and dropping further. I’d give you the latest figures, but I’ve actually stopped looking. Too depressing. I can see all I need to know out the windows. Yet it’s considered strange, even antisocial, to hope for days of drizzle and grey skies. Try saying “lovely day!” if ever it’s overcast again. Take note of the looks you get and the way others will subtly move away.
