"Despite this very large number of cases, as we've expected all along, we have just one patient in our intensive care units in Queensland at present," he said.There are a total of 126 people in Queensland hospitals with COVID for a variety of reasons, but Dr Gerrard said there were only a small number of patients being treated for "significant illness".

Anyone with COVID symptoms, no matter how mild, has been advised by authorities to skip New Year's Eve celebrations and get tested. "At this stage if you have any respiratory symptoms, there's a good chance it's going to be COVID at this point," Dr Gerrard said.More rapid antigen test kits on the wayDr Gerrard said queues at testing facilities were "generally improving", but demand remained high.
