Senator Lidia Thorpe has been ruled eligible to serve in the Senate after she revealed she had deliberately distorted her parliamentary oath of allegiance.
The Senate clerk has ruled Lidia Thorpe eligible to serve in the upper house after the firebrand Senator revealed she deliberately twisted the parliamentary oath by swearing allegiance to the Queen's"hairs" instead of"heirs". swore allegiance to the Queen’s “hairs” not “heirs”,
“The idea that we would think that perhaps there’s not due reverence or due regard being had to this constitutional requirement should somehow interfere with the ability of a democratically elected Senate to continue taking their part in the Senate, takes the point a bit too far,” he said. Senator Thorpe raised her fist in the Black Power salute as she first began to speak, but was forced to start again after she described the Queen as a “coloniser” during her pledge.
While she may have spoken this way during the ceremony, Senator Thorpe would also have signed a written oath that clearly stated “heirs”.
