More than 3000 public school students in NSW have not returned to their classrooms since the remote learning period ended in May.
Most of those absent are high school students who were "teetering on the edge of engagement" prior to the coronavirus pandemic, Mr Fitzgerald told the"They need human connection, [and] when the human connection is gone you lose that form of engagement.
"School is often their safe place. When that was broken through the public health orders, some of those children and young people will never get that back." Ms Ruse said the community sector was most concerned about long-term impacts on young people's health, housing and social connections. She said community efforts were needed to reconnect students with career pathways or further learning, but school might no longer be an option for some.
