Former Reserve Bank governor and now Macquarie chairman Glenn Stevens said central bankers face a difficult environment as they try to tame high inflation.

Former Reserve Bank of Australia governor Glenn Stevens says central bankers have a challenging job ahead of them to avoid recession as they try to bring down high inflation.

“They do face as [RBA governor] Phil Lowe has said, a narrow path to the fabled soft landing. The environment they face is very difficult because supply side developments have turned adverse over recent years,” Mr Stevens said. He did not “have a particular view” on how the panel should proceed but awaits the outcome with interest.

“They have a delicate task to perform but [they’re] sensible people. I’m sure they’ll acquaint themselves well and do a good job, and we await the outcome with interest. I certainly do.”
