But, having done both London and Rio Olympics, being an elite athlete was Breen’s entire life. Tokyo was always going to be her swansong. The 100 metres qualifying time had also shifted from 11.30 seconds to 11.15 seconds. “I’ve only run that fast one day in my entire life,” says Breen, who is the 100 metres Australian record holder at 11.11 seconds.

Today, she’s more philosophical: “It can be scary to feel that vulnerable and hurt but you have to go through that for it not to manifest elsewhere in your life.” One book deal fell through after a publisher pondered it for two years then declined. Finally, 2020 was going to be his year: he had a deal with HarperCollins and his launch event was planned for May.
